Mormon Tabernacle Organ - Things To Do in Salt Lake City

The famous Mormon Tabernacle organ...its 11,623 pipes make it one of the world's biggest and most distinctive instruments. This is another can't-miss attraction on our list of Things To Do in Salt Lake City. One of the most famous organs in the world, the 135-year-old Tabernacle organ is the majestic complement to the 360-member Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It has been rebuilt and enlarged several times over the years and today there are five professional organists in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir who perform daily 30-minute recitals at noon, as well as accompany the Choir during Music & The Spoken Word, the weekly radio and television broadcast concert.

The size of the pipes in the organ range from 32 feet to just three-quarters of an inch. There are are two full-time technicians on Temple Square to maintain the organ. The Tabernacle is open to the public seven days a week and photography is permitted. To hear the Tabernacle organ accompany the Choir, visit Temple Square on Thursday evening or Sunday morning. Though be advised that roughly June through August, the Choir will not be in the Tabernacle, but rather they will utilize the LDS Conference Center to accommodate larger crowds during the busy tourist season.

You can catch the Tabernacle organ recital on our Salt Lake City Tour, or even better, hear it with the Choir on our Mormon Tabernacle Choir Tour.
